Building the tower myself and making the sound at the same time. Building is outside my skill set, so this has been a learning process: cutting, framing and fixing the arches one at a time, with the laptop open nearby for the sound. Between builds, I'm working with old cassettes, field recordings and fragments from this summer's workshops in Leicester. I asked one question in the workshops: what sounds do you keep and take with you as a piece of "home", and what do you want to preserve and pass on? Common threads of nature came up, even for those who grew up in an urban setting. Rivers and streams were what they reached for. I heard for the first time the rising "oo-ooh" of the koel bird in Pakistan. Another reminisced about the "wind of 120 days", a seasonal sandstorm that sweeps through the Sistan region of Afghanistan, and how that sound is now marketed as a sleep aid, known as "white noise". Language came up again: the zhuzhing sounds of Polish, passed to the next generation of Leicester-born children, kept tangible but transformed in their own way. We sampled, experimented and captured some of these sounds together on the Fieldtone Weaver, the Box of Uncertainty and the KOMA Field Kit. They will be built into the sound world of the Pigeon Tower, where visitors can tune in and listen out for these fleeting moments. From drawings to a floor full of plywood. The CNC-cut parts for Pigeon Tower have arrived, and laying them out is the first time I've seen it outside a drawing. The ring segments sit in a circle on the hall floor, the curved wall sections carry their rows of arched niches, and the flexible ply is waiting in the yard. This is the first stage of the build. Over the next few weeks I'm assembling, skinning and finishing it in a church hall in north London, then it travels to Leicester. I'm building a pigeon tower for Leicester and filling it with sound. Pigeon Tower is a sound installation inspired by the pigeon towers of Esfahan, Iran. Through workshops, Leicester community groups recorded the sounds they carry with them as "home": rivers, bird calls, the sound of a language changing as it passes to their children. Each recording is copied and re-copied until only a trace of the original is left. Generation loss as inheritance. Most of what I've made before has been performance, so this is a different process I'm learning lots about along the way. So far there's been staring at planks of wood, rubbish drawings by me translated into CAD by a technical designer, and lots of creative experimenting with materials, analogue tech and sound. The Pigeon Tower will be a wooden impression from a memory, containing fragments of words, culture, and worlds. Step inside and tune in, listen and treasure those fleeting moments.
